Mission Mausam is a government-initiated program launched in September 2024 to enhance India's weather forecasting accuracy and climate research by upgrading observational infrastructure and numerical weather prediction models to a 6 km resolution grid, enabling hyperlocal, hourly nowcasting and improved air quality forecasts.

CURRENT STATE

As of early 2026, Mission Mausam is operational with a ₹2,000 crore budget, involving the India Meteorological Department, IITM, and NCMRWF. It has improved forecast resolution from 12 km to 6 km and is expanding the observation network with 200 automatic weather stations and advanced radars, aiming for a 5-10% accuracy improvement in short- to medium-range forecasts.
