Pain arises when specialized sensory neurons called nociceptors detect harmful stimuli. Nociceptors convert these stimuli into electrical signals that travel via Aδ- and C-fibers to the spinal cord. The spinal cord then relays these signals to the brain, where they are consciously interpreted as pain.

Nociceptors respond to damaging stimuli, including heat, pressure, and chemicals, by generating electrical impulses. These impulses transmit through nerve fibers to the spinal cord's dorsal horn, which integrates the signals and forwards them to the brain for pain perception. Emotional and cognitive factors modulate this experience.
